The Port of Oakland has established an ad hoc “task force” of stakeholders working to establish “benchmarks” (as opposed to standards) for cargo throughput at the port.
In dealing with a worker shortage this past summer, hundreds of new dock workers have joined the Oakland labor pool during the past few months. While some have said that is “all well and good,” many truckers have complained that problems plaguing their ability to improve efficiency are still unresolved.
In an effort to improve efficiency the port is moving towards expanded gate hours. The port published a white paper titled, “Extended Gates Study” in July and its clear truckers are not uniformly positive that extended gate hours on a weekend will do anything to resolve issues being faced during a normal workweek. Numerous WSA members participating at the ports Trucker Work Group meetings are not enthusiastic about Saturday gate hours and believe many trucking companies with differing viewpoints have been improperly excluded from the assembled Task Force.
