The Federal Maritime Commission has voted unanimously to request further information from five marine terminal operators at the Port of Oakland on their plans to expand gate hours and importantly, how the plan is to be paid for.
Concerns from trucking companies, importers and exporters about potential fees for expanding to Saturday gate hours appear to have influenced federal regulators.
Many trucking companies are concerned that extended gate hours on Saturday are not used as a substitute for improving efficiency during the normal work-week. If MTO’s continue to randomly close terminals thinking lost productivity can be made up on Saturday, port through-put will not improve.
Truckers also have concerns about how expanding gate hours to the weekend and not improving efficiency during the normal work-week will impact drivers hours-of-service availability for the following work-week.
